My Review System

What do I take into consideration when I rate a book? Well there are a couple of different things that I look for.

  1. Characters: Above all else, I look at the characters. I strongly believe that characters will make or break a story. I’m not really looking to see how closely I relate to characters, but I do want to see some character development. If a character is the same from page 1 to page 500, then chances are, I will not like the story. But if your character has made some recognizable change by the end of the story, I’ll be a happy camper!
  2. Setting: I want to feel the environment in the story. If it takes place in the South during the summer, I want to feel the dry heat. If it takes place in the rain forest, I want to hear the exotic animals moving around in the background. I want to be grounded in the story and I want to have a clear picture of what the characters are seeing.
  3. Dialogue: This kind of goes with Characters, but I still think it deserves its own point. Sometimes, I can really like a character’s description and then they start speaking and I want to toss the book out the window. Dialogue is hard to write, so if an author can writing amazing dialogue they deserve recognition.
  4. Plot: As in, is there a plot that I can follow? I’ve come across books where the main plot doesn’t really start until the halfway point and that can be frustrating. And then there are books where the plot is so complex that I have no clue what is going on. But if the plot is intriguing and pretty easy to follow, I will enjoy the story.
  5. Miscellaneous: Sometimes authors will do something that I think is absolutely cool. This is an easy way to earn some brownie points with me.

I like to think that I’m a pretty simple reader to please. And I hope my review system shows this. But I’m far from perfect, so if you ever have any tips that would make my reviews a lot better, feel free to let me know in the comments!
