The beauty (that’s laced with a tinge of tragedy) of stories like A Song Below Water is that it reminds readers, specifically young women, that in the real world there are no ‘Chosen Ones.’

Part history book, part astronomy book, part psychology book, Cosmos explores many different origins. The origins of our known universe, the origin of our solar system, the origin of life on Earth and finally, the origin of science. Some of the more interesting parts of the book were the history lessons scattered throughout in here.

A People’s Future Of The United States: Review

In short, this is speculative fiction at its absolute best. Every time I finished a story, I was convinced nothing could top it. Then I’d start the next story and fall in love all over again. (I fell in love 25 times over the course of reading this!)

Also, I want to take the time to acknowledge that Jemisin is a hardworking writer. I believe these books were all published within a year of one another and I’d like to imagine that she had everything nicely outlined and planned out before beginning the first draft. But it’s still impressive that she managed to publish three, phenomenal, award-winning books in such a short amount of time!

The Obelisk Gate: Review

Set in the Stillness once again, The Obelisk Gate, primarily follows two characters, Essun and her missing daughter Nassun, though there are brief interludes from Hoa, the stone-eater who follows Essun. (Read the first book to learn why Damaya and Syenite “disappear” from the narrative.)

The Fifth Season: Review

This entire series is packed with scenes, characters and dialogue to sift through. Though it’s not dense, unlike “The Three-Body Problem” (which I plan to finish soon, likely in March.) But I don’t want to discuss this series as a whole until I review the final book. Until then, I’ll do my best to focus on the individual books.
